ALFAwetlands is a Horizon Europe project aimed at strengthening the future of wetland restoration across the continent. Funded by the European Union, the project focuses on improving the geospatial knowledge of wetlands, exploring inclusive restoration approaches, and developing indicators to guide sustainable restoration that benefits climate, biodiversity, and communities.

As part of its outreach to policy-makers and stakeholders, ALFAwetlands has recently published a Policy Brief outlining key recommendations for advancing wetland restoration in Europe. The brief highlights the importance of co-creation with local actors, using science-based data to guide decisions, and ensuring that restoration delivers multiple benefits—particularly for climate change mitigation and biodiversity recovery.

The brief supports the growing recognition of wetlands as critical ecosystems in European climate and nature policy and calls for stronger, integrated restoration efforts across sectors and governance levels.
