Establishing a bird ringing program in Ulcinj Salina

Collecting data on bird populations provides valuable information for decision making related to wetlands. Montenegro's location on the Adriatic Flyway and its richness of ornitofauna makes it an important site for bird monitoring, and CZIP has become a national expert. Already, prior data collected as a result of bird ringing has been used to advocate for protection of the buffer zone at the Ulcinj Salina site. As this important protected area is currently lacking a management body, further data is needed to advocate for the establishment of such a body as well as for understanding the importance of the site in migration paths for clearly defined conservation measures.

Through this project, CZIP will establish a bird ringing program at the Ulcinj site to collect and prepare data for local and national stakeholders. During bird ringing activities, CZIP brings together licensed ornithologists, colleagues from the region, students, volunteers, and representatives of relevant institutions. While illegal hunting has fortunately decreased within the Ulcinj site, it is still active along the borders, and an active presence on the site will also help identify and dissuade illegal activities. Beyond enabling data collection, bird ringing events also encourage and train future ringers to increase the capacity for these efforts to continue and increase the awareness of wetland habitats and species among citizens.
