Plastics Clean Up campaign in the Farwa complex, Libya

Summary

The Farwa complex, including the island itself and the lagoon, is considered one of the most important wetlands and biodiversity hotspots in Libya. However, increasing threats from plastic waste are negatively impacting the ecosystem and biodiversity and receive little public notice. Though the Bessida Society organization has held clean-up campaigns, this project will provide training sessions with the Libyan Society for Birds to increase continued engagement of priority actors, such as fishermen and students. The project also tackles the issues of waste management and raising awareness of the value of creating and maintaining a plastic-free environment on Farwa Island.

Objectives

  • Protect and restore the island’s ecosystem by reducing plastic pollution, which affects wildlife and the general view of the island.
  • Minimize plastic waste and foster circular economy, by encouraging the 3Rs theory (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle), and improving waste management systems.
  • Raise awareness among the stakeholders and actively involve the community in sustainability efforts through clean-up drives, educational campaigns, and workshops about the detrimental effects of plastic waste on ecosystems and focusing on the importance of adopting sustainable practices.
