Summary

The project aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation in Buljarica Cove, one of the last remaining brackish wetlands on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast and a key part of the Katič Marine Protected Area. Urbanization plans repeatedly target Buljarica, capitalizing on its status as one of the last intact coastal landscapes in Montenegro. Scientific data on nationally protected species and growing habitat degradation will support the development of an action plan for wetland restoration.

Building on the experience of the Montenegrin Ecologists Society in herpetological research, in collaboration with the Center for Protection and Research of Birds of Montenegro, the project will provide updated data on two freshwater turtle species (Emys orbicularis and Mauremys rivulata). The team will conduct targeted field research, assess habitat pressures, and promote collaboration between local communities, institutions, and scientists to support evidence-based conservation and long-term protection of Montenegro’s fragile coastal wetlands.

Objectives

  • Identify threats to freshwater ecosystems and develop restoration recommendations for specific degraded sites among the Buljarica wetlands.
  • Update and expand scientific data on two freshwater turtle species, Emys orbicularis and Mauremys rivulata, and their respective wetland habitats.
  • Promote public awareness and cooperations among institutions, local communities and the public in support of Buljarica wetlands’ long-term protection and sustainable management.
