Munich Airport Steps Back from Vlora Airport Project over Environmental Concerns

On 8 April 2025, German media confirmed that Munich International Airport will end its role as an advisor to the construction of Vlora International Airport in Albania. The decision comes after strong criticism from environmental groups, as well as concerns from the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The airport is being built near the Vjosa River, one of Europe’s last wild rivers. This river is home to critical ecosystems and species that depend on clean, free-flowing water. Conservationists have warned that building a runway and control tower in this area could cause serious harm to the river and the nearby wetlands.

Following these concerns, the Munich City Council announced that the airport company will end its involvement by the end of April. Germany’s Green Party welcomed the move and said future international projects should avoid such risky and controversial decisions.

The Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands supports the voices calling for better protection of this unique river and its ecosystems. The situation in Vlora shows why all development projects must carefully consider the environment—especially in places as sensitive and valuable as the Vjosa River and surrounding wetlands.
