First Spotlight: ANAO’s Waterbird Atlas of the Sebkhates des Aurès Wetland Complex

The Association Nationale Algérienne d’Ornithologie (ANAO) has initiated the development of a comprehensive Waterbird Atlas for the Sebkhates des Aurès Wetland Complex in northeastern Algeria. This initiative builds upon prior monitoring efforts by the regional wetland observatory, which identified significant gaps in species recognition, inventories, and population data.

The Atlas aims to enhance species identification and monitor changes in waterbird populations and the health of wetlands. It is being developed collaboratively with the General Directorate of Forestry, Ministry of the Environment, Algerian Wildlife Watchers Association, the hunters’ federation, local associations, and scientists. By incorporating existing monitoring data and new observations, the Atlas will serve as a vital tool for conservationists, policymakers, and local stakeholders.

To ensure broad accessibility and regional impact, the Atlas will be published in French and Arabic, featuring species names in the local Chaoui language. The efforts to develop this Atlas will also serve as a roadmap to replicate this process for other species and systems of interest.
