Contributing to the EU Water Resilience Strategy
As part of the European Commission’s plans for 2024–2029, President von der Leyen announced the development of a European Water Resilience Strategy. This strategy will address water management, scarcity, innovation, and circular economy principles. It will additionally respond to increasing global water stress.
Wetlands International Europe contributed to the process through the European Commission’s call for evidence and stakeholder consultation. Our contribution emphasised the crucial role of wetlands in ensuring water resilience both within and beyond Europe.
Why this matters
Shaping the Water Resilience Strategy allows us to influence EU policies that have a direct impact on wetland protection and restoration. Our input helps ensure that wetlands are recognised as essential natural infrastructure:
- water management,
- climate adaptation,
- and biodiversity.
By engaging early, we aim to secure a stronger place for wetlands in the EU’s long-term water strategy and support more ambitious actions for nature-based solutions across Europe.
