Camargue Red Alert: From local debate to international stage
Over the past three months, the public debate on the Fos–Berre industrial zone invited stakeholders to express their views on large-scale decarbonisation and reindustrialisation projects — including new logistics infrastructures such as the Extra-High-Voltage Line, the Superhighway, and the Barcarin bridge. The Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands has submitted a position paper, to highlight concerns about the multiplication of infrastructure projects, habitat fragmentation and disruption of ecological corridors (especially bird migration routes), the contradiction with international commitments, and the lack of access to cumulative impact assessments, undermining the right to information and environmental democracy.
The Camargue Red Alert was also presented by Wetlands International Europe at the Ramsar COP 15 in Zimbabwe in July, bringing international echo to the Alliance’s action and shining a spotlight on the threats facing this unique wetland.
