Call to protect the Vjosa River
Nearly two years after being declared Europe’s first Wild River National Park, Albania’s Vjosa River faces growing threats from oil and bitumen extraction, gravel removal, water abstraction, and urban pollution. Many of these activities are poorly regulated or illegal, putting biodiversity and river health at risk.
The Albanian government’s promotion of large-scale, uncontrolled tourism development further endangers the park’s integrity, risking its transformation into a “paper park” with diminished conservation value. IUCN Congress Motion 130 directly supports calls for stronger safeguards against unsustainable tourism in protected areas, reinforcing the need to defend the Vjosa from harmful development.
Take action – Send a letter to the Albanian Government calling to stop these harmful activities and ensure protection of the Vjosa.
