The Red Alert System is a mechanism to identify and try to stop or reduce emerging threat(s) towards wetlands of importance within the Mediterranean Basin. Within the context of the Red Alert System, the term emerging threat is used to define, a direct threat such as (i) Residential & commercial development, (ii) Energy production & mining, (iii) Transportation & service corridors,(iv) Natural system modifications according to the Threats Classification Scheme of the IUCN.
The application can be made by any civil society organization that wants to request the support of the international community to protect a wetland under threat.
