A Decade of Conservation: Celebrating 10 Years of the Albanian Ornithological Society

On March 27, 2024, the Albanian Ornithological Society (AOS) marked its 10th anniversary—a decade of tireless work dedicated to conserving birds and their habitats across Albania.

Since its establishment in 2014, AOS has become a key actor in advancing ornithological knowledge and protecting Albania’s avifauna. Through science-based advocacy, community engagement, and collaborative fieldwork, AOS has made significant contributions to strengthening the management of Protected Areas and promoting a culture of environmental stewardship.

Among its many efforts, AOS has played a critical role in monitoring and protecting species within Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, one of the country’s most important wetland ecosystems. Home to the iconic Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), this park has become a symbol of AOS’s commitment to wetland conservation and biodiversity protection in the Mediterranean region.

The Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands extends its sincere congratulations to AOS on this important milestone. Their work exemplifies the impact that committed civil society organisations can have on conservation outcomes at national and regional levels.

We are proud to stand alongside AOS and look forward to the next decade of shared efforts to protect birds, wetlands, and the communities that depend on them.
