Signs of erosion, one of the critical issues facing the coast surrounding Kune-Vain

Signs of erosion, one of the critical issues facing the coast surrounding Kune-Vain

Summary

The area of Kune-Vain Lagoon, along the northern Adriatic coast of Albania, harbors significant biodiversity. However, rapidly growing populations and tourism development are resulting in significant reductions in habitat and resilience, which will only be compounded by climate change impacts. Despite recognition as a region of critical vulnerability to climate change, authorities lack information about wetland vulnerability and how to incorporate climate change into decision-making processes.

Through a systematic wetland risk inventory, climate change scenario development, and capacity building for local authorities to continue adaptive management planning efforts, this Small Project will ensure that local and national stakeholders have the tools to integrate and implement coastal wetland adaptation and mitigation measures.

Objectives

  • Create a systematic inventory of relevant risks specific to the wetland area from climate change risks and extreme events
  • Investigate and develop possible climate crisis and climate change scenarios for the selected wetland to identify and formulate the site’s adaptation measures plan
  • Increase the information and capacities of local and national actors for adaptive management plans and integrative policies on climate change risks for coastal wetland adaptation
