The Sebkhates of Aurès wetlands, recognized for their significant ecological value, have been the focus of a detailed waterbird census conducted by the Algerian National Association of Ornithology (ANAO) from December 2023 to April 2024. This census covered both migration and breeding seasons, providing critical data on bird biodiversity across 13 key areas of the wetland complex. These areas included Gareat Timerganine, Chott Tinsilt, and multiple sites within the Gadaine Complex such as Draa Boultif, Chott Ezzemoul, Tazourit, Pont-aéroport, Chott Djendli, Gamra, Bousouar, Dgaraa El Bidh, Kouanine, Dharaa Dehane, Dharaa Lagbour, and Mellal.
Strategic observation points were set up to ensure thorough coverage and effective monitoring across these diverse habitats. The initiative’s primary goals were to pinpoint critical habitats for various waterbird species, augment existing biodiversity databases, estimate population sizes, and study evolutionary trends among the species. This information is crucial for informed decision-making and effective management strategies to preserve these fragile ecosystems.
One of the standout discoveries during the census was a new breeding colony of the Greater Flamingo, which included more than 1000 nests on five islands in Gareat Tincilt, a designated Ramsar wetland. This finding highlights the success of ongoing conservation efforts and the global importance of the Sebkhates of Aurès as a biodiversity hotspot.
This comprehensive waterbird census not only directly protects the area’s biodiversity but also enhances understanding of the ecological dynamics at play, supporting future conservation initiatives and sustainable management practices.
