Mediterranean Coastal Day 2024 Highlighted Women’s Role in Coastal Sustainability

On September 25, 2024, Algeria hosted the Mediterranean Coastal Day, which focused on women’s vital role in achieving coastal sustainability. The event addressed the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on the Mediterranean region, which is warming 20% faster than the global average. Women in rural areas, who are often responsible for providing food, water, and education, are especially vulnerable, facing increased hardships due to droughts and unpredictable weather.

The celebration emphasized the need to address gender-based inequalities and violence, which are worsened by climate-related conflicts. By focusing on these challenges, the event aimed to promote sustainable development and women’s empowerment in the face of climate adversity.

We also took this occasion to introduce the Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands team, a group of passionate women, who are making a difference in Mediterranean wetland conservation, including Mediterranean coastal wetlands, which play a crucial role in protecting shorelines, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing resilience against climate change.
