The Azraq Wetland Reserve, a crucial habitat in Jordan, has recently reported significant bird sightings, signaling positive developments in the restoration and health of its natural habitats. After over 60 years of absence, the Eurasian Whimbrel has notably returned to the reserve. This rare occurrence was documented by ornithologists Brian Nelson and Ian Andrew, who observed three vagrant individuals—the first since the 1960s. This sighting is a significant indicator of the ongoing recovery and improvement of ecological conditions within the reserve.
Additionally, the Rosy Starling was spotted at the Azraq Wetland Reserve for the third time since records began. Previously recorded in April 1976 and again in May 2020, this recent sighting adds to the growing list of bird species making a return or debut at the reserve.
These sightings are rare events and vital signs of the resilience and gradual rejuvenation of the Azraq Wetland Reserve’s ecosystems. For further information, please contact Hazem Al Hreisha
