Sarantaporos Science Week

Sarantaporos Science Week

In the framework of the ‘Save the Blue Heart of Europe’ campaign, MedINA, along with Euronatur, RiverWatch, and EcoAlbania, organised the Sarantaporos Science Week, a voluntary multidisciplinary scientific initiative that aims to highlight the environmental value and biodiversity of the Sarantaporos River – the largest tributary of the transboundary Aoos/Vjosa River – and to strengthen efforts for its effective protection and conservation. Over 60 Greek, Albanian, and other European volunteer scientists will gather in the historic village of Vourbiani, Mastorochoria Region, Municipality of Konitsa Epirus, Greece, from 28 June to 5 July 2024, to explore the mysterious Sarantaporos River and bring new scientific data through extensive field research. The Sarantaporos Science Week is a collaborative effort of vital importance for the conservation and strong institutional protection of the unique Aoos/Vjosa River system, the last big free-flowing river of Europe, which is currently ongoing pressures and is exposed to upcoming threats, like the projected installation of dozens of small hydropower plants. It is funded by Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT), Patagonia, the Austrian Development Agency through the project “ESPID4Vjosa”, Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung, EU LIFE, and Wetlands International Europe.
