The Mediterranean region faces severe and prolonged drought conditions, impacting southern Europe and northern Africa.
The drought has led to critically low water levels, impacting agriculture, ecosystems, and water availability. Water use restrictions have been implemented in several regions, and reduced crop growth has been reported in Morocco and Algeria, exacerbating food security concerns.
The Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Drought Observatory are focusing on innovations such as developing the first European Drought Risk Atlas to enhance community preparedness and resilience through improved water efficiency, drought-resistant crops, and access to water resources.
The prolonged drought highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address immediate impacts and prepare for future challenges.
